Housing is a human right, but the streets of American cities are full of tents.
The crisis is real.
There are nearly 600,000 homeless people in the United States. Since the pandemic began, the real number has probably reached closer to a million and continues to grow. For the fourth consecutive year, homelessness increased nationwide.
"Housing is the right to live somewhere in security, peace, and dignity.” Article 25 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
As California goes, so goes the country. Los Angeles County claims 63,706 people are currently experiencing homelessness, although the number is more likely 125,000 people or more—a stunning reality in the 6th richest economy in the world. The majority of homeless people in the U.S. are male and white, with about 161,500 living in California.
California accounts for more than half (51%) of all unsheltered homeless people in the nation, according to the 2020 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR). In California, 70% of people experiencing homelessness did so outdoors.
